Gaios is the kind of place that rewards slow walking. The capital of Paxos sits around a sheltered harbour, protected from the open sea by two small wooded islets — and the whole town seems to arrange itself around that calm stretch of water.
Arrive by sea and the first thing you notice is the light on the water and the row of pastel facades along the quay. Gaios grew up as a Venetian port, and that history is still written into its architecture: tall shuttered houses, faded ochre and rose plaster, and a bell tower above the rooftops.
Around the harbour
Begin on the waterfront. The quay is lined with tavernas and cafes that spill out under awnings, and from almost every table you look across to the islet of Agios Nikolaos, with its small Venetian fortress, and beyond it to Panagia, the wooded islet that gives the church — and the view — its name. Fishing boats and day-trip caiques come and go; in the early evening the light turns the whole basin gold.
Into the lanes
Step back from the water and Gaios becomes a maze of narrow lanes. Follow them inland and you reach the main square — a shaded, unhurried space where locals gather in the cool of the afternoon. Around it you will find small shops, a bakery or two, and the kind of family-run kafeneio that has changed very little in decades.
There is no single sight to tick off here. The pleasure is in the wandering: a doorway framed in bougainvillea, a glimpse of the sea at the end of an alley, the sound of a meal being prepared somewhere above you.
When to go
Mornings are quiet and good for photographs, before the day boats arrive. Late afternoon, as the heat softens, is when the town is at its most sociable — the right time to find a table by the water, order something cold, and watch Gaios settle into the evening.
For guests staying with us, Gaios is often the easiest introduction to the island: close to most of our villas, walkable end to end, and a reminder that on Paxos the best things are rarely rushed.
