There is no better way to understand Paxos than from the water. The coastline keeps its best secrets for those who arrive by boat.
A day at sea is, for many guests, the highlight of a stay. The island is small enough to explore in a single unhurried day, and the waters are calm, clear, and almost impossibly blue.
A loose plan for the day
Set out in the morning, while the sea is glassy and the light is soft. Head south first, toward Antipaxos — the tiny sister island whose beaches, Vrika and Voutoumi, are famous for their turquoise water and pale sand. Arrive early and you may have a cove almost to yourself.
From there, drift back along the west coast of Paxos, where dramatic white cliffs drop straight into deep water and sea caves hollow out the rock. It is a different island from this side: wild, sculptural, and largely untouched.
Tips for a good day on the water
- Go early — the popular anchorages fill up by midday in high season.
- Pack simply — water, shade, snorkelling gear, and a long lunch.
- Let the weather decide — the sheltered east coast on breezier days, the open west when it is calm.
- Slow down — the point is not to see everything, but to swim, drift, and stop wherever the water looks irresistible.
Boat hire on Paxos is straightforward, and for smaller vessels no licence is required. Our team is always glad to help guests arrange a boat and point them toward the coves worth seeking out.
